Ros Taylor plays about on the best summer sports sites

Summer sport has only just begun. And even if shouting from the sidelines is the closest you'll get to exercise, the web can help.

US Open
The US Open tennis starts on August 30. The 1999 site is still in skeleton form, but tennis enthusiasts who are prepared to travel to Flushing Meadow can buy tickets there.

Australian Open
Further ahead, tickets for the Australian Open in Melbourne will be on sale in October via online agency Ticketek. The tournament begins on January 17.

Barmy Army
Perhaps only the Barmy Army would travel that far for love of the game. Their indefatigable spirit shines through some endearingly old-fashioned web pages. The troops are already anticipating the winter tour to South Africa and New Zealand, and the Army arranges special travel deals for fans. Embittered supporters should try the Barmy song lyrics: "We're England's famous cricket fans/ Who travel near and far/ If we're not busy singing/ You'll find us at the bar..."

Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup tees off on September 21 in Boston, Massachusetts, and the official website is already up. Weekly tickets are sold out - unless you have 10 corporate clients and $50,000 to spare - but places are still available for the 81st PGA Championship at Medinah, Illinois. That event starts on August 9, leaving just enough time to book the week off and purchase a relatively affordable $250 grounds pass online.

Links Heaven
Want to burn up the Tarmac by proxy? Links Heaven claims to have the largest selection of Formula One links on the planet. Or visit Lastminute. Its sports listings currently include a weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed for £219 and places at the 127th Open at Carnoustie (£246-£499).

Tour de France
Truly passive spectators will, of course, prefer to follow sport on the web. The Tour de France is underway and the accompanying site is excellent. Its excitable running commentary is updated every few minutes. Move quickly and you could order a yellow jersey (around £40) - just in time for the July 25 finish.
