Independent vote
By next year, more people will be travelling independently than taking package holidays, according to Mintel research for Michelin Travel Publications. But independent travel is far from dominated by the young because the backpacker of the 80s and 90s has now left higher education with large debts and a desire to get into the working world as soon as possible.
The research identifies two emerging groups of travellers - young executive thrill seekers and golden-age travellers. Mintel forecasts that demand for long-haul "exotic" holidays will be spearheaded by these two groups.
