First impressions: Chatty, game for a laugh. Fantastic building - a converted flour mill with old beams and solid walls. Lovely views of the canal - and convenient location opposite Tetley's Brewery.

What are the rooms like? They're all different; ours was restful blue and cream, with fresh lillies, a bowl of fruit, champers in a bucket, CD player which pipes into the bathroom, satellite TV, plate of barley sugar. Astonishingly quiet for central Leeds.

The bed test: Very comfy, but room too hot at night, and that Tetley's Brewery lets out a gigantic fart every half hour.

The bathroom test: Big bath, "42" branding on everything, wonderful towels, posh toiletries (including Molton Brown mouthwash).

The restaurant: Michelin One Star for Pool Court at 42. Excellent food and presentation but service very fussy (they even slice your bread at your table) and only one veggie choice. Three courses £37.50. Also the Brasserie at 44 for a livelier, cheaper night out. Stupendous breakfast in the hotel: kedgeree, veggie sausages, 16 types of jam.

The lounge: Small - better to nip next door to the Brasserie.

What is there to see within walking distance? The brilliant Corn Exchange area (funky shops, very lively bars); Opera North; Leeds City Art Gallery; Brewery & Granary Wharf... and Harvey Nick's.

What is there to see within a 10-minute drive? Wonderful Wharfedale; National Photographic Museum at Bradford; Elland Road (Leeds United's ground); Salts Mill at Saltaire (Hockney museum), 20 minutes away.

How much a night? Doubles in the week £128 (room only). Weekend doubles £125 room only (including champagne).

Would you go back? 'Appen I would.
