What is the best thing about the Almenara?
We have amazing views across the Andalusian countryside and the Mediterranean. On a clear day you can see Africa. However, the best thing is the Golf Central Reservation System which allows guests to book tee times at six courses in Sotogrande, including Valderrama, considered one of the best in Europe.

Doesn't Sotogrande also host polo's Gold Cup?
Yes, polo has been played in Sotogrande for many years and is the main reason people come here in August. Last year about 6,000 people attended the final of the Gold Cup, which takes place on 2 September this year. The competition attracts many of the world's top players. The Argentines enjoy playing here. They are able to speak their mother tongue and there is plenty for them to do off the field!

Are there problems with female fans then?
No, we look after our guests very well. Polo players do not seem to attract the same level of adoration that football players do - yet!

Do you support any teams?
I don't like to take sides, but I'll be supporting Santa Maria and Ghantoot, which are both staying at the hotel. Ghantoot is the team of His Highness Sheikh Falah, 27th son of the Emir of the United Emirates.

What is there to do in the evenings?

La Cabana is a new restaurant in Sotogrande. It has been converted from the home of Joe McMicking, the original owner of Sotogrande, and has a South American-influenced menu. The bar is open until 3am. Zaldia serves Basque cuisine, while El Molino del Conde, in Castellar, is renowned for its lamb speciality.

What about a day out?
Seville, Jerez and the Alhambra Palace are easily accessible, as are Ceuta and Tangier in Morocco by ferry.
