A top concierge reveals all

Marnie Weiss, Head concierge at the Lenox, Boston

How long have you been running?

The Lenox celebrates its centenary in December. It is a very elegant, smaller property and we have tried to preserve the integrity of the building. Of course we do still offer all the luxuries that a visitor would expect from a modern hotel.

What is there to do nearby?

We are in the Back Bay area of Boston and there are 80 - 100 restaurants within a ten minute walk. Newbury Street is just one block away and is filled with cafes, boutiques and galleries. There are whale watching cruises from Boston Bay that go to Stellwagen Bank and you are guaranteed to see humpback whales and dolphins there during the summer months. The coastal towns of Rockport and Gloucester are only a couple of hours drive away and full of history.

What sort of clientele do you attract?

We get a huge range of people: Europeans; Americans; people on vacation and here for conferences. We are conveniently placed for both the shopping and business districts of the city - there are a couple of dot.com businesses in the vicinity which provide us with many of our clients.

Any famous clients?

Oh yes. The Boston Film Festival is held every September and we have had many stars staying here: Kevin Spacey; John Travolta; Helena Bonham-Carter... Also Good Will Hunting was filmed nearby and both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck stayed here, along with many of the crew.

Any amusing tales to tell?

We had one visitor from the Deep South who rang up and asked which day he should come to New England to see the leaves change colour - he thought that they were green one day and brown the next! In the end he had a wonderful stay with us and also saw the leaves change in New Hampshire and Cape Cod.

• To celebrate its centenary, The Lenox is offering a special rate of US$329 for the first night and US$20 for the second night. Small Luxury Hotels of the World reservations: 00 800 525 48 000.
