What’s in a number?

Hang on. That's a number, not a website address.
It's not exactly memorable, but it is the fastest way to find out about New South Wales on the web. And if you're travelling to Sydney for the Olympics, it's a much better place to start than the official site at www.olympics.com.

But surely it's just sport for the next few months?
It's true that Sydney schoolchildren have been given four weeks off to watch the Olympics. But NSW is currently in a perpetual state of festivity. Sunscreen Sydney (nothing to do with beaches, but a celebration of Australian cinema) has just begun, the Olympic Arts Festival is underway, and the beaches, rainforest and outback are still waiting to be explored.

Will it help me find a place to stay?
Yes - and it will also help you find a place to eat. Keen to try kangaroo, crocodile or wallaby?

No...
A pity, because you can search for restaurants that serve native Australian cuisine. The baby barramundi, a fish, comes seasoned with bush herbs, wrapped in paperbark, baked and served with wild lime relish. Sounds especially tempting, I think you'll agree.

I'd prefer to watch animals instead of eating them...
Then next month's Eden Whale Festival, the rodeo or the sheep races may appeal. Bring your own shorn merino, in or out of costume.

It's almost enough to make me leave the stadium for a day or two.
Better still, wait until next year and avoid the crowds altogether. The flights and accommodation will be cheaper and Sydney, judging by the evidence here, will still be partying.
