First impression: The uninspired outside of this newly-opened hotel belies the inside, which really is an urban retreat. Taking inspiration from Californian and Japanese interiors, its purpose is to pamper and calm: one bar includes a waterfall, standing stones and a fire sculpture.

What are the rooms like? Decor varies, with different colours on each floor. Ours was a suite, with trendy oatmeal sofa and armchairs, mini-CD player, a PlayStation in the drawer and a proper hairdryer as opposed to the silly ones you usually get. There are even ISDN links.

The bed test. Lush, large and with a portable television at the foot. Fat pillows and cushions, velvety throws. Ours had a wooden ledge all the way round for holding those handy things one needs in bed at night (I mean a glass of water).

The bathroom test. Tiny mosaic tiles, a power shower with bodyjets, a wide bath, specially-made toiletries that you simply can't leave behind and fat white towels.

The restaurant. You can eat in the upmarket, Californian-style Las Brisas restaurant or have sushi in Oshi, the bar/restaurant/ spa area.

What is there to see within walking distance? The Royal Concert Hall is just across the road, so is the new Buchanan Galleries shopping centre and the best of Glasgow is also on the doorstep.

What is there to see within a 10-minute drive? You wouldn't want to drive anywhere when you can unwind in Oshi spa and indulge in Aveda treatments.

How much a night? Rooms start at £65 a night, with suites starting at £125.

Would you go back? I'd go right now and especially if you threw in a back massage.
