A top concierge reveals all

Graham Hamill, concierge at 42, The Calls, Leeds.

Have there been any famous guests?
Yes, we have had pop stars such as Martine McCutcheon and Louise here recently. We get lots of Yorkshire TV people because the station is based just up the road and we have even had filming at the hotel. During the summer the TV cricket commentators stayed during the Test match at Headingley against the West Indies. They were very friendly and were quite disappointed it finished in two days instead of five.

What sort of guests usually stay?
During the week it is mainly business guests, but at the weekends it can be anyone. A lot of people come up to Leeds just to do some shopping at Harvey Nichols, even Londoners who just want to compare shops. We are very popular with wedding guests and honeymooners, who often request room 307 which is spacious and has a black and white striped decor. We have 41 rooms and all are decorated differently so regulars always ask to try a new room. Visiting football fans often stay when their team is playing Leeds United. I have been a Leeds fan since I was in nappies. It's always a friendly atmosphere.

Any unusual requests?
Nothing too strange but I have had to go and buy chocolate for a lady at 3am.

What about a day out?
I recommend the Tetley Brewery Wharf, which takes you through the ages of beer brewing and the Royal Armouries across the river from us. Shoppers should go to Victoria Quarter. I have lived in Leeds my whole life and my family often go out to Bolton Abbey which is about half an hour away. It is in the countryside, by a river, and is one of our favourite places for a picnic: there is still a small church. Harewood House has tons of things for children to do.

What about a night out?
The top Indian restaurant in Leeds is probably the Dar Bar. The Brasserie next door, which does a smashing steak, and The Calls Grill nearby are good. But whenever I go out for dinner myself I like to have a load to eat and I find that the portions in designer restaurants are a bit small!
