First impressions: Imposing doorway flanked by bay trees gives way to large, airy Georgian house. The dusty magnums of wine that stand in the reception area bear witness to the hotel's close association with the grape.

What are the rooms like: Named after world-famous regions of viniculture such as Pommery, Marques de Caceres and Veuve Clicquot. We stayed in Laroche, famed for its Chablis. Situated at the back of the hotel, this room offers a fine view of the rear courtyard from its window seat.

The bed test: Emperor sized and welcoming, thanks to the beautiful linen and abundance of cushions and pillows.

Bathroom luxury: Enamel fixtures and tastefully decorated in tongue and groove. Big bath and power shower for testing out the aromatherapy soap and shower gel.

The restaurant: Dried flowers on the walls, wooden floor and wall panelling provide a natural feel. The staff are efficient without being overly attentive. Plenty of choice for meat eaters and vegetarians, extensive wine list in range and price. £30 a head for two-courses not including wine.

The lounge: Relaxing settees and chairs and lots of period furniture make it the ideal spot to take tea in the afternoon.

What is there to see within walking distance? Do the Winchester walk (leaflets available from the hotel) that takes in the 13th-century Great Hall, home to the Arthurian round table, and the famous cathedral.

How much a night? Doubles/twins range between £89 and £125. A suite costs £185. Continental/English breakfasts are £8.50 and £11.50 each, respectively.
