How did Hilltop start?
I started the business seven years ago. I had purchased the land some time before with the intention of opening some sort of accommodation, and then I relocated an old villa from TeAnau 200 kilometres to the West. Once the renovation was complete, Hilltop's doors opened.
What sort of people stay at Hilltop?
We get people from all corners of the world coming to Hilltop. It is a unique place, and there is a real feeling of staying in a friend's home. There are a few luxuries not normally associated with backpackers' accommodation, as well as a fantastic view. A couple of trends that I have noticed are that the numbers are increasing, people are travelling for longer and there is a more mature age group of backpackers.
What is the area like?
We are situated on a hillside overlooking the beautiful Tahakopa Bay, on the Catlins coast, in one direction and native forest and farmland in the other. New Zealand's South Island has an incredibly diverse landscape. There are fjords, mountains, glaciers, lakes and river, magnificent forest, crystal clear ocean and great people.
What do you suggest for a day out?
There are lots of activities they can do, such as boogie-boarding, sea kayaking, canoeing, hiking, mountain biking or even feeding the sheep. In terms of local highlights there are three fantastic waterfalls nearby: Purakaunui, Matai and McLean. The Cathedral Caves are in the cliffs near the ocean and Nugget Point is a wild and windswept peninsula from which you can spot dolphins, penguins and sea lions. Also, don't miss the fossilised forest, which was formed millions of years ago.
What do people do in the evenings?
Most just sit on the deck with a nice glass of New Zealand wine and chill out. It's very enjoyable. Probably the best part of my job is meeting people from all over the world: I have been lucky enough to make some great friends.
What is the most important thing backpackers should pack?
The good old Swiss army knife.
Ever tempted to start a luxury hotel?
Yes, I've been thinking about building my own!
