First impressions: On the banks of Lake Windermere, Miller Howe's old-worldly English kitsch provides a relaxing counterpoint to the fashionable boutique hotel. No formal reception and a staff who understand the importance of balancing attentiveness with giving guests space helps you enter the calm zone the moment you enter.

What are the rooms like: Cosy and sumptuous with humbling views of the lake.

The bed test: Big enough to engage in soporific splendour.

Bathroom: Simple and white with larger-than-average bath. The power shower is exfoliatingly strong.

The restaurant: Worth the trip in itself. Not only are the views amazing but the award-winning restaurant is run by Susan Elliot who was the protégé of the renowned Cumbrian chef/bon viveur John Tovey. Elliot creates food which is delicious yet comforting with just the right amount of twist. The five-course dinner is £39.50 while the wine list is extensive and varied.

The lounge: There are three, with an appealing hotchpotch of porcelain and glass objets d'art, intimate window seats and gentleman's club leather armchairs and sofas.

What is there to see within walking distance? Windermere - the largest lake in England - and the last sheep in Cumbria. There's various sporting activities connected with the lake, including fishing, sailing and horseriding. But most paths are still off-limits due to foot and mouth.

What is there to see nearby? The rest of the Lake District. Explore the old haunts of the literary greats, from Wordsworth to Beatrix Potter.

How much a night? £75 rising to £135 for a room with one of those divine views.
