Spanish Pyrenees - walking the GR11
Illustrated account of a trek along the Spanish border with various pieces of advice - the authors only came across three shops on their journey.
Virtual Pyrenees
web.inter.NL.net/users/ANTenPETER/wandelen/virtual%20 pyrenees/virtualpyreneesE.html
Yes, it's a long address, but worth typing in. The authors walked and biked from coast to coast during the late 90s, and they have assembled an impressive itinerary with photographs and recommended guides. The best way to navigate the site is by clicking on the dates (starting from 1995). Photos and captions appear in a separate frame.
Parque Nacional Ordesa y Monte Perdido
Excellent itineraries (in Spanish) within the Ordesa national park, along with farmstays, refuges, campsites, hostels, flats and hotels.
On Foot in Spain
On Foot in Spain is an organiser of walks and hikes aimed at the US market. Tours in Picos de Europa, Camino de Santiago, Galicia and the Basque country are described in sufficient detail to be useful for those who haven't visited the region before. There's also an excellent reading list.
Aragon Es Asi
Interesting guide to the Aragon region, including a curious section on its dinosaur population. In Spanish.
Walks in the Canaries
home.wanadoo.nl/erwin. harkink/Hiking/Hiking.html
Few people visit the Canaries to walk, but after reading these accounts of hikes on La Gomera, Tenerife and La Palma, you might well consider it. Not terribly fluent, but the authors are Dutch.
Mr Walker's Spanish and Portuguese Islands
www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Trails/1744/spain.html
Patchy commentary from Mr Walker on Fuerteventura, Madeira, Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
Andalucia.com
Chiefly useful for its introduction to Andalucia's national parks.
Andalucian Youth Hostel Network
www.inturjoven.com/uk/indexportada-uk.asp
Cumbersome and over- ambitious guide to Andalucia's youth hostels. The easiest way to approach the site is via the interactive map at www.inturjoven.com/uk/mapanavegable.asp , and then to return to the homepage for prices and a booking line. (That's a telephone booking line, not an online system.)
FEEC
A mountain-activity portal (in Spanish) run by the Catalan Climbing Federation: rather slow, but potentially useful if you intend to do some climb ing. The strong mountain refuge section lists both FEEC and non-FEEC shelters.
Portugal
Fourteen short tours of Portugal (under "Itineraries") from the Portuguese tourist board's website, which is also a very good place to find accommodation.
