First Impressions: The Griffin certainly stands out with its bright pink walls close to the A470, three miles north of Brecon. Originally a farm, then a pub, it was derelict before being restored by young new owners a year ago. It is now an inn and top-class restaurant with bedrooms attached.
The rooms: Seven, including three with four-poster beds. No TV in mine, but a radio and tea-making equipment, supplied with real milk in a jug.
The bed test: Wide doubles with pillows and duvets encased in crisp white cotton.
Bathroom: Small but tasteful in yellow pastels, carved out of a corner of the bedroom. Molton Brown soaps in dispensers and attractive chunky chrome shower.
The restaurant: Succulent local produce, prepared by Ballymaloe-trained chef Charles Inkin, a former London wine bar manager and now one of the Griffin's owners. Lots of lamb, fish delivered daily from the coast, Herefordshire pork and Welsh cheeses. Expect to pay £60-£70 for two.
What to see within walking distance: Fine views of the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains and pleasant walks along country lanes.
What is there to do nearby? Brecon is a five-minute drive and Hay-on-Wye, with all its second-hand bookshops, 10 miles away. Fishing on the Usk and Wye, sailing and windsurfing on Llangorse Lake, climbing in the Beacons.
How much a night? £59.50 for a double (B&B) and £73 for a four-poster - prices for the room.
