The holiday group Club Med has ordered inspections of its swimming pools worldwide, after the accidental death of a French boy in one of the company's Greek resorts. The accident occurred at the Golden Coast Hotel in Nea Makri, about 40km north-east of Athens, where the boy was staying with his mother and grandfather. A spokesman from the Paris-based company confirmed yesterday that about 140 pools would be inspected. "Extra security measures will be decided if necessary," said the spokesman, who asked not to be named.
Seven-year-old Axel Blin, from the Paris area, died on Sunday at a resort near Athens after he was trapped by the powerful suction of a drain in a swimming pool. State coroner Philippos Koutsaftis said the boy died of an internal haemorrhage, and not drowning as was earlier presumed.
An investigating magistrate launched a probe into the boy's death on Tuesday, a day after criminal negligence charges were levied against the hotel's general manager, Olivier Bergeret, a maintenance worker and Alain Gilles, the technician responsible for the upkeep at the pool. Media reports said that the manager and technician, both French, are not in Greece at the moment, and that international warrants could be issued for their arrest.
