One airport hotel is very much like another. What's so special about this one?
Bath Road is a soulless strip of dual carriageway en route to Heathrow lined with airport hotels which look like they have been constructed from Duplo by an unimaginative five-year-old. The Heathrow Marriott stands out because it looks like it has been constructed from Meccano by an inspired 14-year-old.
First impressions?
Stupendously large lobby with plenty of buzz and a huge 'modern-art installation' dangling from the atrium. A pianist tinkles away, while well-heeled travellers and business executives swill around in the Atrium Lounge, which is, the hotel brochure informs us, 'the place to be seen!' The cocktails here have names like Jetsetter, Heathrow Express and Runway 2000.
Let's hope the food doesn't take its inspiration from inflight meals
There are five bars and restaurants to choose from, including a Costa Coffee in reception, an Italian restaurant specialising in Tuscan cuisine and an American grill.
That's all very well but I've got an early flight to catch
Then you'll be delighted to know that check-in is speedy and efficient and room service arrived within five minutes of putting the phone down. The beds are comfy and the rooms are almost silent, despite the proximity to the runway. Best of all for anyone who has recently got off or is about to embark on a long-haul flight - the hotel has an indoor heated pool, gym, sauna and spa.
• Rooms cost £86 per night from Friday to Sunday based on two people sharing on a bed-and-breakfast basis. Valid for stays until the end of April 2002. For bookings call Superbreak on 08705 992993.
