Singapore Airlines (0870 608 8886; www.singaporeair.co.uk) is offering longhaul passengers stopping over in Singapore a night's accommodation in a hotel from only £1 to £14 depending on its category, plus discounted entry to a range of tourist attractions from now until 31 March.

Mind the gap

In response to record numbers of young people planning a gap year overseas, VSO and Tourism Concern have launched a film called 'Your Place or Mine?' with tips on making sure the impact travellers have on local communities is positive. Burning issue

Tourists planning to visit rural areas in the US, where about 40 large wildland fires are burning, are being advised by the Foreign Office to get further information from the National Interagency Fire Centre in Boise, Idaho (001 208 387 5050; www.nifc.gov).

Ticket to Ryde
