This restaurant in a 16th-century building that looks like a country pub even has large sofas next to an open fire. Fish is the house speciality. The three bedrooms all have wrought iron and brass beds.

The Lemon Tree, Kent

Lettonie, Bath
One of only nine UK restaurants with two Michelin stars, the food is based on classic French cooking with a Latvian twist (Lettonie is French for "Latvia"). The grand high-ceilinged restaurant has crisp white tablecloths and chandeliers. Four double rooms, all en suite.

Lord Nelson's House, Oakham
Winner of The Good Food Guide's Restaurant with Rooms 2001, this medieval timber-framed building has four bedrooms. The Lady Emma Hamilton has a canopied four poster and a chaise longue; surprisingly, the Fanny Nelson is more daring - purple walls, silver bed, pewter furniture and zebra cover.

Mr Underhill's, Ludlow
A Regency watering hole beneath the ramparts of Ludlow Castle. While the restaurant may be small, the beds are enormous.

The Starr, Great Dunmow
A 15th-century coaching inn with eight comfortable ensuite rooms in a converted stable block. The beamed restaurant has a varied menu and a loyal local following.

Weavers, Haworth

Scotland
The Altnaharrie Inn, near Ullapool
The only road to the inn is impassable except by 4WD. Most guests get picked up by boat from Ullapool which ferries them across Loch Broom and takes them back in the morning. The restaurant has two Michelin stars.

Creagan House, Perthshire

Old Pines, near Fort William
An all-inclusive package at the Good Food Guide's Restaurant of the Year 2000 buys dinner, bed and breakfast. Fish is home smoked; bread, pasta, ice cream and preserves made on the premises. It's child-friendly, and an aroma of wood smoke pervades.
