Last resort

The last chance to build a new ski village in Europe is how developers describe a plan to open an entirely new, car-free complex on the slopes of the purpose-built French resort of Les Arcs.

Details of the project, which will include 800 high-quality apartments, a spa, swimming pools and restaurants at 1,950 metres, emerged for the first time yesterday. The village is scheduled to open for the 2003-2004 season - at the same time as the planned new lift connecting Les Arcs with its neighbour, La Plagne.

Behind the scheme is the Compagnie des Alpes, which has interests in a clutch of European resorts, and Canada's Intrawest, a developer of North American resorts including British Columbia's Whistler-Blackcomb.

Accommodation will allow holidaymakers to ski in and out. Intrawest's involvement suggests the apartments will represent a significant leap forward from the cramped egg boxes endured by millions of skiers since the advent of French purpose-built resorts. The apartments will be for sale, though it is likely that, when they are not being used by their owners, they will be rented out under the management of a major hotel company.
