To convert euros into pounds: it's the same as converting kilometres into miles: 1.6km = 8/5km = 1 mile. Do the same with euros. This works for the time being, until the pound reaches a more sensible rate: when it does, we can join the euro and forget about conversion.

Having to place your toothpaste cap on the side of a really dirty sink, or accidentally dropping it down the plug hole (or worse) can be very frustrating. Buy a "flip-top" capped toothpaste before you go. If it runs out, you can exchange the flip-top cap with any standard screw-top capped toothpaste you buy when away.

Buying international train tickets in Europe can be really expensive. Often, a substantially cheaper option is to buy a ticket just as far as the border. Once there, you can get a local train or bus across the border for as little as £1 (or even walk across), and then pay for the rest of your journey in the second country. I saved myself £20 doing this between Vienna and Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic.

If your child has turned 16 since the last family holiday, remember that they are no longer allowed to travel on the family passport - they need their own. Don't be caught out at check-in like us!

When travelling long distances overland in Chile, be sure to take the magnificent sleeper trains rather than a bus with their uncomfortable semi-reclining seats. The sleeper carriages were built by Germans in the1930s and still have most of their original features including mahogany fold-down beds, which a steward will make up for you when required. For around £35, two people can have a whole compartment to themselves for an 800km journey, including the use of a hot shower and plush dining car.

If you wish to stay in the Khao San Road area of Bangkok, don't think that the only hostels are on Khao San Road itself. Five minutes' walk away from the road there's is a wide selection of cheaper, cleaner, quieter and better value hostels which are still very close to all the action.
