Don't imagine that all international airports stay open 24 hours a day. I arrived at Sydney airport in the evening, expecting to sleep on a bench all ready for an early-morning check in. Unfortunately, the airport closed around 10.30pm leaving me to find last-minute (expensive) accommodation. Always ring the airport or check with locals first.

A third variant on the two-car walk is the one car, one bicycle option. There are two ways of doing this.
1 Drive to the start and drop off the non-bikers. Drive to the end, leave the car and bike back to the start. Pick up the bike in the car after the walk.
2 Drop the bikes at the end, drive to the beginning and walk to the bicycles. Bike back to the car. If there happens to be a stream to bathe in, your walk turns into a triathlon.
EJ Croft's idea (Travel tips, November 6) seems rather unfriendly to me.

On long-distance bus journeys, whenever you get off for a "pee/snack stop" - always remember to make a note of the registration number. When travelling through the many colourful, chaotic and magical bus stops of the world, I have learnt to my cost that all the buses do look the same.

When going to countries where hygiene standards aren't very high, its always worth packing a pair of flip flops or similar footwear to use in the shower as a precaution against fungal foot infections.

When sightseeing in Bucharest, watch out for thieves posing as plain-clothes policemen, particularly near the People's Palace. The routine is that someone comes over to have a chat about the palace, then suddenly two "policemen" appear from nowhere waving ID cards in your face and demanding to see your papers and money, accusing you of changing currency on the black market. All very convincing and, before you know it, your money has been stolen.
