It's that time of year again. You know, the time when all the organised people (or those envied mortals who aren't overdrawn after Christmas) are booking summer holidays. The trains are full of commuters flicking through holiday brochures trying to escape the deep depression of frostbite and darkness falling at 3.30pm. So if you're in a fantasising type of mood, here are our suggestions for what's going to be hot in 2002:
· Cottages with hot tubs. Erase that childhood image of UK holiday cottages minus central heating, plagued by 50p-piece electric meters. Last year some of the most heavily booked UK holiday cottages were the ones with every conceivable luxury, including indoor heated swimming pools. This year, you can go one step further and nab a cottage with heated hot tub on the deck. Perfect for Scandinavian-style family fun or other activities we can't publish here. See Hoseasons Country Cottages (0870 534 2342).
· Visit a British hotel with the emphasis on the food and booze as well as the fluffy bathrobes. No, this isn't an impossibility and you don't have to drive to France to get it. The in words to look for are 'restaurants with rooms'. West Street (the cheaper neighbour to the Ivy in Covent Garden London) has three sexy bedrooms to flop out in after gorging yourself in the dining room. (Call 020 7010 8700 for further information.) Others to keep an eye on include Mr Underhills, in Ludlow, Shropshire; Winteringham Fields, in Winteringham, Lincolnshire; and Sandgate Hotel, at Sandgate, Kent. See the Which? Hotel Guide 2002 for more details.
·This is going to be the year that Scotland gets hip; it will be full of romantic couples beating a path to the burgeoning numbers of small privately run hotels with trendy decor and sophisticated cooking.
Forget salty stodgy porridge and landladies chucking you out at 10am. Check out The Three Chimneys, a restaurant with six rooms on Skye (01470 511258) or The Pool House Hotel, Poolewe, Wester Ross (01445 781272).
· New Zealand is expecting a bumper year as fans of The Lord of the Rings head Down Under. It's probably never been cheaper to fly there and the exchange rate is excellent for Brits. Fly to Auckland on Singapore Airlines for £565 return by booking through Quest Travel (0870 442 3511). Book before 15 January for travel before 30 June.
·The Blairs' post-Christmas visit has put Sharm el Sheikh and the Egyptian Red Sea firmly back on the map. There's not much culture here, but a string of five-star hotels at three-star prices, year-round sunshine and fabulous diving mean plenty of people will be swapping their winter sun holiday in the Canaries for the Red Sea. Longwood Holidays (020 8551 4494) has one-week package prices for £496 per person, including B&B at the five-star Hyatt Regency, transfers and flights from Gatwick in June.
And finally, what's out in 2002? Hotels with so much technology you need a master's degree in IT to work it out (and even then, you might not). Hotels which stop serving breakfast at 10am. Flying ridiculous long distances such as to Vietnam just for the weekend. Sooo pre-DVT.
