Deep and meaningful
Slate dug from Cornwall's Delabole Quarry is the theme of an exhibition at the Falmouth Art Gallery. It provides the raw material for work by former Turner prizewinner Richard Long and is the subject for local painter Kurt Jackson.

Music for the brave
Have a go at playing a bronze gamelan at Hampshire's Allen Museum. Ornately carved and lavishly painted, the instrument originates from Central Java, where it traditionally accompanied all-night shadow puppet theatre.

Mime field
