Lindeth Howe, Windermere

I hear there's Pottermania in the Lake District this year. Yes, but don't worry if you're Harry Pottered out. This is Beatrix Potter, whose naughty Peter Rabbit turns 100 this year. Like the other characters in Potter's 23 animal tales, Peter was painted in the Lake District, and the National Trust has a series of themed events to mark his centenary. True Potter fans should stay in Lindeth Howe, a house bought by Potter for her mother, and where she illustrated Timmy Tiptoes and Pigling Bland. If you don't know who they are, mug up on Potter books in the hotel library, with its views over Lake Windermere.

So is the hotel just one big Beatrix Potter attraction? Thankfully no. It's a pleasant country house done up with modern, comfy bedrooms. The Beatrix Potter connection is celebrated in small, tasteful reminders, such as photographs of her around the hotel and an embroidered motif of Timmy Tiptoes on the fluffy bathrobes.

Any other attractions for Beatrix Potter fans? Potter's farm, Hill Top, in the village of Sawrey, is a boat trip across Lake Windermere; Lindeth Howe arranges trips in the Muriel, the boat Potter herself used. Before you go, drop in on the World of Beatrix Potter (01539 488444) in Bowness, where for £3.75 (£2.50 for children) you can spot everyone from Jeremy Fisher to Jemima Puddleduck in its cutesy animated display. Watch the film showing which parts of Sawrey were painted in Potter books, then go hunting for the spots.

And when I'm tired and hungry? Head back to the hotel for a swim and a sauna, followed by a tasty - though light - meal. The rooms all have kettles, so you can make yourself a cuppa whenever you like.

· A night at Lindeth Howe (01539 445759) in a standard room costs £48 B&B, and a superior lake view room costs £72 per person.
