· As the cost of a taxi from Rome Ciampino to the city centre will probably be within a few pounds of two fares on the Go shuttle bus, it would be advisable to take a taxi, especially if the bus is not direct to your hotel and you therefore need to make another connection from Piazza Santa Maggiore.

· I flew with Go two weeks ago. We arrived at Ciampino Airport in the evening and the only people who had not bought bus tickets were left disconsolate as we drove off. The bus driver would not sell them a ticket and there were no taxis in sight. Add the £18 bus fare to the £26 (£13 single) it will cost you to get by train to Stansted Airport.

· I had a bad airport taxi experience last year in an official taxi and I do speak some Italian. The driver asked if I would like to be taken back to the airport on my return journey, and I gave the usual polite English evasion, "I don't have plans yet but give me a card and I'll call if I need a cab".
Big mistake. When he asked for the fare it was way over double the rate and when I queried it he said it was because I was paying for the return fare now! I ended up paying over the odds because I was a woman on my own and it was pretty scary. Just say No Thanks!

· According to the current Rome Airports guide (which I got at the beginning of February) a taxi costs about 26 euro, though from experience with colleagues at Fiumicino recently it's as well to get an estimate.
The booklet also says that there is a public bus service operated by CO.TRA.L from Ciampino airport to Ciampino railway station and Anagnina metro station (line A) - this runs every 30 minutes during the day, about every 45 minutes in the evening. It leaves from outside the departures hall where there are ticket machines.
Hope this is helpful!

· I suggest your reader considers the Rome Ciampino airport to the city info on Go's competitor Ryanair's website (they also fly there, MUCH cheaper, incidentally, than Go in my experience - I got a fare to go in July for £10.50 there, £18.99 back!) They list a public bus service timetable but no price unfortunately. I suspect cheaper and I'm sure your reader could follow this up on the web or with an Italian Tourist Bureau in the UK. They do however list a taxi as being 35 euros - approx £22. Regards

· As a family of four we took a taxi in February between Ciampino airport and our hotel in Trastevere - 40 euros (about £25) each way. Very convenient and not too expensive for a group and half an hour door to door. But for one or two people the Go bus is cheaper though slower and you will probably need another bus to where you are staying. Whichever way you choose have a really good time (its hard not to in Rome).

· I would seriously advise you to take the coach provided by Go. The £9.00 ticket should include the return journey from Rome to Ciampino provided you are in time at Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore to take the return coach. The taxi would be much more expensive. The cheapest way would be by train. But from the airport to the station there is a 20 minute walk which is ok if you have a rucksack or if you can carry easily your luggage, but not otherwise. Be at the place where the coach leaves on your way in at the appropriate time in Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore and catch the appropriate Go coach; there is only that one! Don't miss it. We found it impossible to get a taxi from Ciampino station to the airport and I am Italian and speak the language. Have a good time and enjoy Rome.

· My girlfriend and I travelled to Rome with Go last March and decided not to take the Go bus. Ciampino airport is quite a distance from the centre of Rome and estimates on cab were about £26 (from the Mini Rough Guide). We were also put off by the price of the Go bus and so decided to get the train. This cost us in the region of £4 between us but took approx 2 hours to reach Terminus station in the centre of Rome due to the infrequency of trains and buses at that time of year. The bus laid on by Go takes about 30 mins and the price is for a return ticket.
Although we got to practice our Italian we probably would have got to our hotel a lot quicker if we'd just caught the bus.
Hope this helps. Can heartily recommend the Mini rough guide to Rome and also the La Foccacia restaurant just off Piazza Navona.

· You can get a bus from Ciampino airport which stops directly outside the airport by the taxi rank. You can buy a bus ticket from the newsagent inside the airport which cost 50p last year. There is good luggage space for your suitcases on the bus.
You need to get off at Ciampino station where you can then get on the train/metro to Termini station. Make sure you have lots of small change as the ticket machines do not take large domination of notes. The fare is less than £1 and the journey is quick and clearly signposted. So in all the total was less than £2 single which is a lot less than the £18 Go is charging.

· A taxi from Ciampino airport to Rome costs more than the Go bus. The cheap solution is to take a local bus from the airport to Ciampino station, train to Rome Termini and metro to your hotel. You save a lot on fares but there's no guarantee that the bus will connect with your flight or you wont have to wait for a train. Keep it simple - take the Go bus!

· Last week, we (including wife and daughter) spent six days in Rome, travelling by Rayanair to Ciampino Airport. I anticipated difficulties regarding the transport from the airport to a monastery where we were intended to stay. I had taken enough change to put in the ticket machine for the bus fare to the nearest Metro station at Anangina. We were able to get the ticket for one Euro from the "Bar" at the station.
When we reached the station, it was easy to get the weekly bus/tram/metro ticket for E12.40 from the ticket machine and the machine gave back the change. Once it's punched, you need not re-punch it for one week so you avoid buying tickets every time you travel.
We saw police arresting three gypsy girls who had stolen articles from visitors and hidden them under their long skirts, so were careful in number 64 bus, which is notorious for pick-pocketing.
Never use a private taxi. If possible use white taxi with a taxi board.
During August, mosquitoes are rampant and I advise you to take repellent to apply to your skin. You have to climb several steps in Rome to see most of the monuments and if you are not used to walking and climbing steps you are better off getting fit before planning to fly to Rome. If you want to save money, buy your food and drinks in advance from supermarkets rather than from tourist spots.
You cannot get in the St Peters Basilica if you are women with a sleeveless blouse. Get a scarf to wrap around your shoulder. Local shops charge you heavily. Always get a map with bus numbers for the monuments and sites. At Coliseum " Gladiators "charge you 5 or 10 Euro for taking photographs with them, which they will not tell you in advance.
Keep an empty bottle to take drinking water from the various water outlets near the monuments. The drinking water is safe.
