I shared suitcases with my husband as Shaun McCarthy suggested (Travel tips, June15). One, however, was lost/stolen, and when claiming on our insurance we were penalised double excess because both of us had lost belongings. It may be worth enquiring about the position from your insurance company beforehand.

If you are travelling to St Petersburg, fly to Helsinki (cheaper flights) and then take the afternoon train to St Petersburg, five hours on a Russian train, where they serve tea in the Russian style. A very romantic trip, especially in winter.

In Slovakia, you cannot buy tickets on the trolleybuses. These have to be bought in little kiosks, some of which are located at stations. There appears to be a whole 'industry' of ticket inspectors (official and maybe unofficial) who take advantage of foreigners who are not aware of this.

If you take your car abroad, carry a spare pair of headlamp-beam deflectors. If one falls off, you won't be able to buy another outside the UK.
