Hotel and catering industry workers in the Balearics and the Costa del Sol have called off a series of strikes which threatened to disrupt summer holidays.

Room at the inn
A south Somerset hotelier is giving away accommodation in August. The owner of the Manor Arms Hotel (01460 72901), an inn near Crewkerne, claims the phones stopped ringing after gloomy weather forecasts. Guests will be charged £29 per person for a three-course meal and English breakfast and rooms will be free, with a £5 weekend supplement.

Virgin's NY flights
Virgin Atlantic (01293 450150) has announced plans to add its first new services to North America since 11 September. From the end of October, Virgin will reinstate a fifth daily service between London and New York

Mayan journey
Cox & Kings (020 7873 5000) are launching a train journey through the Mayan ruins of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. The eight-day tour costs from £1,945 per person.
