Survival tips for solo travellers

The essential advice for those travelling alone.

1. Dress appropriately, if not conservatively. Shorts are unusual for men and women in Muslim countries and the further off the beaten track you go, the more eyebrows will be raised. Never go topless unless you are sure it is permissible. Even then, it might attract unwanted attention. In countries such as India, consider wearing local dress. Travellers in saris report that they get more respect as well as fairer prices when bargaining in markets.

2. You are more likely to meet fellow travellers in hostel-type accommodation than in a swanky hotel. If you're in a resort or on a cruise, join in as many activities as possible.

3. If guys start steering the conversation around to sex, switch to the local economy - it's the one thing that simultaneously fires them up and dampens their ardour.

4. If you need to ask directions and you're a single woman, try to ask another woman or a man with children.

5. Female travellers should try to sit next to other women on trains and buses. In some places, such as Cairo, the metro has women-only carriages.

6. Familiarise yourself with safety issues in countries you will visit by reading guidebooks and checking the Foreign Office website.

7. Be wary of flirtatious behaviour, especially in places with different cultures. What is harmless fun in Europe may be misinterpreted elsewhere.

8. Try not to respond to any obnoxious comments. Learn a few local phrases for emergencies, such as 'leave me alone', and 'go away'. A firm no is understood in any language.

9. Eating alone is only a problem if you think it is. Take a book to the dinner table, write some postcards, or indulge in a little people-watching. It's surprising how much you'll enjoy it.
