First impressions: Not an attractive building from the outside, but you've probably not come to Paris to look at your hotel's exterior. This four-star's slightly sombre, formal décor might appeal most to its business clientele, but the red-carpeted reception area is going to get a makeover this winter.

What are the rooms like? Elegant without chintz - lots of warm, dark burgundy in the bedspreads and curtains. More than enough space to feel at ease, and perfectly soundproofed - you'd never guess 10,000 French drivers were desperately honking their horns at the Arc de Triomphe free-for-all just a hundred yards or so away. If you're missing us, there's high-speed internet access in all rooms.

The bathroom: Plain, marble, good size, with a full-length bath. Separate loo may appeal to partners of long-term bath loungers; especially useful in the suites, where there are TVs at the foot of the bath.

The restaurant: The star-awarded W restaurant is unlikely to win accolades for atmosphere; the food, however, is superb. Knowledgeable and friendly service and a great wine selection. From a generous foie gras starter to a turbot filleted expertly at the table, it was a carnivore's delight - but a request for vegetarian food, where there was nothing on the menu, also produced some commendable improvising from the chef.

What is there to see nearby? Just about everything: strolling and shops on the Champs Elysées by day, cabaret and cinema in the evening. The Warwick is virtually at the Arc de Triomphe, and a moderate walk or a quick metro hop to the most famous landmarks, the Louvre and Tour Eiffel.

How much a night? From 390 euros for a room, 600 euros a suite. The excellent buffet breakfast is 28 euros extra. Cheaper weekend packages are available.
