First impressions: The central part of Cambridge's first designer hotel was once the private house of a Victorian surgeon, but most of it is 21st-century state-of-the-art minimalism-muted colours; natural fabrics; calm, hushed corridors; a few carefully placed paintings, mostly in muted colours. It seems more like the headquarters of a secret and ridiculously over-funded research establishment.

What are the rooms like? Large; simply but stylishly furnished; very comfortable. The sound insulation shuts out the outside world, but there's broadband access if you need it.

The bed test: Impressive. The pillows are as good as those in the Oberoi Group's hotels, and they don't come much better than that. The Egyptian cotton sheets manage to be both crisp and soft. The duvet is as light and fluffy as a well-made soufflé. Even the wooden headboards are comfortable.

The bathroom: Floor-to-ceiling slate tiles and expensive fittings. You could spend many happy hours playing with the taps and plugs.

The restaurant: The head chef of Graffiti, Stuart Conibear, boasts a CV that includes the Ivy and the Dorchester, so the restaurant is understandably busy - probably the best food for some miles around. However, hotel guests are guaranteed a reservation. Modern French cooking; starters around £7, mains around £17.

What is there to do nearby? It's a longish walk into the town centre - best to take a taxi, or the Felix can arrange bicycle hire. No shortage of things to do: museums, galleries, pubs, old buildings, punting on the Cam, racing at Newmarket.

How much a night? Doubles from £155. Until November 29, two nights' B&B from £248 per room.
