First impressions: A modern hotel with an unprepossessing exterior in a business park just off the M1. But don't be put off. Step inside for a modern take on a French château, a feast of stylish, understated opulence. There's an imposing lobby with a log fire and the thickest carpet I've ever walked on, plus original artwork throughout.

What are the rooms like? Big, with brown, cream and beige decor and lots of natural wood. Each of the 123 rooms has a desk, sofa, satellite TV and CD player and four varieties of complimentary tea, including herbal.

The bed test: Huge, with crisp cotton sheets and a light yet cosy duvet. Pillows galore, with a choice of down or non-allergenic foam, and half a dozen subtle lighting options, all accessible without getting up.

The bathroom: Gleaming white and chrome, with a separate bath and walk-in power shower. Intelligent lighting was flattering, even in the morning.

The restaurant: Retro chic with a terrace for warm evenings. The menu changes daily but highlights during my stay included lobster thermidor, roast lamb and fresh pasta. I also enjoyed the best breakfast I've ever had.

The bar: Take your pick from a modern bar, an airy, glass-covered atrium, or an indoor terrace overlooking the pool.

The spa: I had the 13m pool to myself, ditto the whirlpool, sauna, monsoon shower and steamroom with mesmeric fibre-optic lights.

What is there to do nearby? Six miles away are the city's shops, bars and restaurants. And there's the Yorkshire countryside on the doorstep.

How much? Weekend rates from £60pp per night B&B, including use of spa facilities.
