So far, in the train, boat or plane debate, most of you have voted sailing the best form of family friendly transport. But the advice has been to take it slow, with pre-planned nights in B&Bs en route.

But whether you fly, sail or rail, there's still the (literally) sticky problem of motion sickness. When he was little, the slightest air turbulence sent my brother rooting for his sick bag. But I've noticed that many airlines no longer routinely provide them. So you'll be glad to know you can now buy your own supply. They are called Chuckie Bags (I thought it was a joke, too), and come in packets of 10 with clips to close them 'after use' (chuckiebags.com). These are far more hygienic, claims the manufacturer, than a supermarket bag or old ice-cream tub.

Still, I always stuff several plastic bags in my hand luggage to allow for wet clothes or half-eaten crisp packets that accumulate on the drive from the airport.

Another aspect of air travel is securing infants. When I wrote several months ago about the policies enforced by airlines, many readers wrote in with their own experiences. 'My son flew to Vancouver and back without a seatbelt at 16 months,' wrote Kerry Logan. 'I understood Canadians considered this safest. I was told to hold him in the "burping position".'

Louise Stoll said that she has invented a restraint system for young children - 'an easy to use harness type arrangement inspired by watching my daughter carry her child off a plane, toddler on one hip, pregnant belly in front, bulky car seat in other hand'. The system, known as Amsafe Cares, is currently up for certification.

It would be comforting for parents to have some international agreement or common practice on the subject of securing babies on board. Otherwise, of course, we can continue to go by boat.
