There's no such thing as a car that's too small. There's only a car that doesn't have enough add-ons. As you read this, our regular family vehicle will be driving back to Britain very heavily loaded. Not only do we have all our bikes, but an all-terrain double buggy to boot (although it won't fit in it). Nevertheless, it will be a relatively roomy ride, as all our kit is kept outside.

First, there's the roof box (thule.co.uk). We've had one for years, as it's the only way of transporting the double buggy without breaking it down to the nuts and bolts. Our roof box is the old-fashioned sort (which takes a whole fraught afternoon before we leave to get properly secured). But a new Ocean range has just been launched, which promises to be far easier to fit with just a couple of clicks, and can be opened at the back as well as the side in case you're parked tightly on the ferry.

This holiday, we've branched out and added two bike racks, also attached to the roof (and also thule.co.uk) In case we progress from cycling to more demanding outdoor pursuits, there are yet more add-ons to assist us. Surf board carriers, kayak holders ... It all costs, of course, but it's still cheaper than buying a bigger car.
