First impressions: Once through the laurel-covered gate, a walk up the path takes you to this fine semi-detached family home with two guest rooms. The hall speaks of things to come: sisal floors, pale walls, stripped wood.

What are the rooms like? There are only two: an en suite double and the twin, my room, which had white-painted floors, wicker chairs and a restful but stylish simplicity. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided.

The bathroom: The twin-room bathroom is adjacent but private, and bathrobes are provided. The bath is clawfoot and has large bottles of shower gel and shampoo.

The bed test: White wrought-iron beds, matching crisp linens, fat duvets and muted tartan blankets.

The restaurant: There is none. Plentiful fresh fruit and continental breakfast are served in the downstairs kitchen. Aldeburgh is full of decent restaurants, and has a cookery school and some of the finest fish and chips you are ever likely to eat.

The bar: None, but the pub is a two-minute walk downhill, which will take longer on the way back after a few pints of the locally brewed Adnams.

What is there to do nearby? A walk or a sunbathe on the pebbly beach, of course, and a visit to the fishermen's sheds where you can buy fresh crab and fish. The famous festival when it is on. Take a peek at Maggi Hambling's controversial 12ft-high scallop shell memorial to Benjamin Britten. If you are adventurous, borrow one of the guest bikes. And if it is raining, sit yourself down in the lovely old town cinema.

How much? £65 per night per room. Minimum two-night stay at weekends.
