International calls can be hellishly expensive, but a new phone that connects to broadband internet servers will enable you to make them free. The PeerCall is an intercom device that looks like a normal telephone handset and can be used to speak to anyone who has the same type of phone, anywhere in the world.

It plugs into broadband internet connections at home, in the office, hotel rooms or internet cafes, much as a laptop would do. Users dial the PeerCall number of the phone they wish to reach and talk for as long as they like at any time, without any extra charges for calls or connection.

The only cost is the initial outlay for the phones, which are £146.86 including Vat and delivery.

The manufacturer, EME Digital (020 7538 8105; www.emedigital.co.uk) suggests the phones would be particularly useful for people taking gap years who frequently want to speak to parents, partners or friends left behind.
