· Two friends and I have just returned from four weeks' independent travel in Sulawesi. Contrary to what some British institutions say, it is very safe. We travelled in the north and south and were there during the National Day celebrations and there were no demonstrations.
The people are extremely friendly, helpful and happy. Depending on interests, Sulawesi has a lot to offer for hiking, diving, snorkelling, swimming and culture. A must: Bunaken Island, Tana Toraja, Togean Islands and Makassar.
The following person helped us to organise transport and hotels: sulawesi_adventure@yahoo.com. His name is David and he is very helpful. Another useful website is travelarc.com/sulawesitravel.html
