What have been the highlights of touring with the Happy Mondays?
I started touring with them in about 1985 and we've been going ever since. We just get up to the same nonsense that any band does really. The best festival we've ever played was Rock in Rio in Brazil - it's massive. There's the lambada, Brazilian ladies ... We had five days' holiday for one day's work with all your friends. Brilliant.
Were you tempted to pick up a new pair of maracas in South America?
No, I don't buy me own maracas. I usually have other people to do that for me.
Must be fun having the band to travel with?
Yeah, it's good. We still travel together all the time and we've still got the old tour bus spirit - but that's really only because we can't afford a limo each!
Do you enjoy the travelling or would you rather stay at home?
I love travelling, I like being on the road and being in different places every day. I don't get sick of living out of a suitcase. I like holidays where you're not laying about doing nothing - I get really bored. I like beaches because I like surfing. I surf in Cornwall mainly, I was down there to play a gig last weekend and I had four hours out surfing - but I do prefer a beach with a bar.
What kind of holidays do you take?
The last one was in Morocco and that was good because I just got stoned out of my head and ate loads of food. The next holiday I'm planning is to Goa in India for the same reason. I like going where they grow fine ganjas. It's one of my favourite things. I'm a connoisseur. That's my ideal holiday, going anywhere they grow a good supply. Amsterdam is great - that's how it should be in England. You can walk into a bar look at the menu and then sit down and have a smoke. Morocco was great too. But in the winter I also go snowboarding.
How did you get into snowboarding?
Through work really. I was offered a chance to go on a trip to Andorra for a week a few years ago and I've not missed a single winter since. I just try and fit in as many weeks as I can. I've never tried skiing and I've learnt to snowboard now so I don't want to have to learn to do anything else. I just want to get straight on the mountain.
I go all over. I do the Snowbombing event every year, which is held all over the place. I always have a week in Val D'Isère too because I've got a friend who owns a house there . But any excuse to get on my board I'll take it. This year I fitted in three weeks but one year I managed five.
