First impressions: An ivy-clad former bank next to a medieval bridge in a town synonymous with radical politicians Oliver Cromwell and, er ... John Major. Inside, wood panelling, a crackling fire and smart lounge provide a warm welcome; think stylish town-house hotel meets traditional bustling inn.
What are the rooms like? All 24 rooms, designed by the owner's wife, are individually themed, with colourful mosaic tiles, chaise longues and even a tiger-print carpet in room 10. Several have river views. There are flashy Bang & Olufsen TV sets with a varied list of CDs and DVDs available.
The bed test: As wide as the river Ouse with a mountain of pillows and soft layered sheets.
The bathroom: Sparkling suites with impressive shower-heads, Molton Brown minis, fluffy dressing gowns and all the towels you could ever need.
The restaurant: A choice of two: The Terrace's conservatory setting offers a seasonal selection and light bites: tuna carpaccio with wasabi (£5.95), breast of pigeon with wild mushroom risotto (£14.95); or opt for the four-course menu (£36) in the dining room. The extensive wine list suits all budgets and is worthy of the AA's 'Best wine in a restaurant' award. Mobile-phone ban in both.
Breakfast: After a wake-up call of fresh orange, coffee and morning paper delivered to your room, wander down for scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.
The bar: Dark, sunken lounge area with deep sofas, local ales and good coffee with free refills.
What is there to do nearby? River walks, cycling and watersports at Grafham Water; horse racing in Huntingdon and Newmarket. Cambridge is a 20-minute drive away.
How much a night? From £80pp for D, B&B and afternoon tea.
