Flying across the Atlantic in comfort is set to become more affordable with the launch of a new London-New York service promising business class service at vastly reduced prices.

Maxjet, which took off this morning on its first flight from Stansted airport to JFK, is a business-class-only carrier with fares starting at £854 return including taxes and fees. Comparable business class fares in other carriers normally range from £1,500 to £4,000.

While the airline will offer traditional business class amenities - such as premium business class lounges, pre-departure drinks, portable on-demand entertainment and a 60-inch seat pitch, Maxjet appears to be partly inspired by the success of no-frills airlines, promising on its website that customers "won't find wasteful extravagance that drives up costs".

It is the second carrier to start up exclusively business class services from Stansted to New York, following the lead of American-owned Eos last month. While Eos is using Boeing 757s with just 48 seats, Maxjet is flying Boeing 767s with 102 seats.

Gary Rogliano, CEO of Maxjet, said that business class travel is an untapped market that should be made more affordable. "We are dedicated to creating a smarter way to fly and we intend to constantly evolve to meet all business class travellers' needs.

Maxjet will operate services to New York daily except Saturday.
