Beating the Fringe frenzy

Going Solo
If you are venturing to the festival alone then Festival Beds is your best bet for finding a room. Prices increase the closer you get into town but you are guaranteed to be near the city's cultural hotspots as well as a fringe venue. Singles prices range from £20-£40 per night.

Large group apartments
There is nothing like visiting the Fringe with a huge group of friends. Edinburgh's self-catering apartments are ideal for those late nights and late mornings. Whether you are in a group of four or a group of 20 Aarajura has both guesthouses and apartments. The Royal Mile Apartment, located in the historic heart of Edinburgh, sleeps eight at £75 per person for five nights.

Camping
Camping is a long-standing tradition at British festivals and Meadowheads Mortonhall Caravan & Camping Park, just 4.5 miles from the city centre is ideally located for Fringe-goers. There are regular buses running every 20 minutes and night buses on the hour. Prices start from £17 per night for a tent for two with no electricity.

Student digs
For students on a budget try Hostel World's selection of single-sex and mixed dorms. Prices start from £15 for a 16-person dorm but for £25 you can get a mixed ensuite dorm at St Christopher's Edinburgh Hostel.

Last-minute deals
If you pack your bags to leave before finding a room for the night, Late Rooms has some great offers on new hotels in the heart of the city. Old Waverly Classic Hotel has double rooms reduced from £189 to £80 on certain days. Slightly further out and with more availability is Quality Hotel Edinburgh Airport.Double rooms here range from £85 to £115.

Striking out of town

Glasgow
Just a 45-minute train journey - or £5 bus ride - from Edinburgh, with its own famous West End and city centre. The Kelvingrove Hotel has double rooms from £30pp and is a five-minute walk to the main train station. See Visit Scotland for more details.

West Lothian
For those who are prepared to pay for luxury, there's Macdonald Houston House with rooms starting from £130 pp per night. A 30% discount during August means you could get a room for £45.50pp including breakfast. The local train to the city centre is a mile down the road and the train journey to Edinburgh takes 20 minutes. Located in rural surroundings, there's always the historic Lithlinglow to escape to if Edinburgh gets too frantic.

Or stay at Greywalls Hotel; last-minute deals include dinner and breakfast with a double room for £140. For a more leisurely festival experience, you can try out the golf courses before your 30-minute train ride to Edinburgh.

Portobello
Joppa Turrets Guest House at Portobello is in a prime coastal location and only a bus ride from Edinburgh. You can catch a play and soak up the city life in the daytime and retreat to the sea at night. Prices start from £29pp for a double room. See Visit Scotland for more options in Portobello.

Stirling
How about spending the night in a castle? If you're after a romantic break for two or a trip for family, at Culcreuch Castle in Stirling you get the best of two beautiful cities: it is only an hour's drive to Edinburgh. A courtyard room including a full Scottish Breakfast is £40 pp and £8 extra per child. Extras like candlelit dinners are £27 pp.

Finally, transport tips

Parking spaces in Edinburgh are notoriously scarce even for locals. The Park and Ride services are the best way to avoid city traffic.

If you are staying out of Edinburgh make sure to check the last train or bus times to avoid getting stranded.
