1 St Helena

The last remaining Royal Mail ship brings supplies to the 5,000 or so inhabitants of St Helena in the South Atlantic, but also caters for cruise passengers. An airstrip is planned for 2010 so get there before it's "discovered".

· A 12-night fly-cruise package costs £2,065. rms-st-helena.com

2 Iceland

Sail silently along the dramatic coast of Iceland's sparsely populated western fjords on a former Clipper Round the World race yacht with a crew of expert guides.

· From £605pp four nights, excluding flights, boreaadventures.com.

3 Scotland

An hour's boat ride from Skye brings you to the uninhabited Isle of Rona where a welcome party - in the form of Bill the caretaker - greets you with tea and scones, sustenance for the mile and a half walk to your accommodation, the aptly named Escape cottage.

· From £350 per week, 01835 822277, unique-cottages.co.uk.

4 Italy

There's a scattering of B&Bs in Ginostra, a remote village on the Aeolian island of Stromboli. Try Luna Rossa who'll arrange for a donkey taxi to carry your luggage up to the guest house.

5 India

Diu, a former Portuguese colony off the coast of Gujarat, doesn't have the most spectacular beaches in India but it does have a lovely easy-going vibe and cheap beer - think Goa 30 years ago.
