A mountain hut that mixes altitude with attitude, high (5,600ft) in the Buchanan mountain range on South Island. It is a perfectly Wordsworthian idyll of isolation, if you can ignore the resident chef and the fixer, who can arrange walking trails, skiing and an abiding sense of contentment. The Whare Kea chalet has two double bedrooms, gas fires and a wraparound veranda, but to keep guests down to earth the loo is outside (for hard-to-argue-against environmental reasons).
