A review has been set up to look at how the UK can "decarbonise" road transport in an attempt to cut greenhouse gas emissions, Gordon Brown said yesterday.

Sir Nicholas Stern, producer of the climate change report of the same name, has been asked to look specifically at transport with the help of Professor Julia King, vice chancellor of Aston University and a former Rolls-Royce director.

The review will feed into the work of the new public and privately funded Energy Technologies Institute. The transport sector is deemed responsible for one-quarter of the UK's CO2 emissions.
