Why now?

For the Romería del Rocío on May 28 when hundreds of thousands of pilgrims descend on the village of El Rocío, in the Parque Nacional de Doñana, to pay homage to Our Lady of El Rocío. It may be Spain's biggest pilgrimage but the mood is far from solemn. There's singing, eating and drinking along the way and fireworks at night.

Getting there

Fly to Jerez (64km away) with Monarch (flymonarch.com) from Manchester and Ryanair (ryanair.com) from Stansted. Where to stay Hotel Los Helechos (doubles from €50, hotelloshelechos.com), a mansion set around patios in the nearby seaside town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Where to eat Close to the action in El Rocío at Cortijo de los Mimbrales (cortijomimbrales.com) for local seafood.
