Health and safety, wouldn't you know, with economics on the side. Travelodge claims that slipping on a bath mat is a leading cause of injury in the hotel world, so the company created bathroom floors with 'enhanced slip resistance'. But that still doesn't quite explain why there's no shampoo, and a ration of one towel per person. Evan Davies, the BBC's economics editor, calls it 'value engineering': the creation of a rigid financial model which pares down costs relentlessly. Travelodge's website has a different take: 'Most people staying away from home will pack a toiletries bag, so don't need miniature bottles of synthetic-smelling lotions and potions.'
