Readers’ travel photograph competition: November – markets

From bric-a-brac in Paris to a fish market in the Gambia, here are your best images from this month's competition

Readers comp Nov2012: Hmong people selling chillis in Can Cau, Vietnam
Nick Board: Women of the Flower Hmong people selling chillis in Can Cau, Vietnam, close to the Chinese border. It's certainly the most picturesque setting for a market I've ever seen. Photograph: Nick Board
Readers comp Nov2012: fruit market in Konya, Turkey
James Lidgett: The main fruit market in Konya, Turkey. It's quite a feast for the eyes from high up. Photograph: James Lidgett
Readers comp Nov2012: Market in Jinja, Uganda
Gabriella Fairley: On my first day in Jinja, Uganda, I visited the market to buy some food for dinner and was entranced by its atmosphere and aura. I quickly realised the market was the best place in town to pick up a bargain – and the local gossip. This photo shows a local boy and his father proudly showing off their beef and goat. Readers comp Nov2012: sari market in Jaipur, India
Goncalo Dumas: I took this picture in a sari market in Jaipur, India. The markets in the 'Pink City' run along narrow alleys with little natural light and very cramped conditions, and are an overload of visual, audible and olfactory stimulation. I am always struck at how industrious and creative people are with the use of space in these vibrant markets. Photograph: Goncalo Dumas
Readers comp Nov2012: small market village in Burma
George Turnbull: This is a small market village in Burma where conditions are fairly sparse. The lady selling doesn’t have a lot of stock and the chickens seem fairly slim – as might be her chance of selling.  Photograph: George Turnbull
Readers comp Nov2012: Paris Marché aux Fleurs et aux Oiseaux
Stuart Kerr: No trip around Paris is complete without a visit to one of the markets. The Marché aux fleurs et aux oiseaux is just around the corner from Notre Dame and sells flowers and birds along with bric-a-brac on stalls such as this one. None of the three clocks on display are showing the correct time! Photograph: Stuart Kerr

Readers comp Nov2012: night market in Pondicherry, southern India
Stuart Beckwith: I took this at a night market in Pondicherry, southern India. On this fruit stall, the man had a mountain of grapes, and was weighing up a serving for me when I took this photograph, making the grapes in his hand almost appear as a hairpiece for him. Photograph: Stuart Beckwith
Readers comp Nov2012: Cow in main bazaar of Paharganj in Delhi
Lesley Lord: Walking through main bazaar of Paharganj in Delhi this fleeting image of a cow, apparently window shopping for cushions, appealed to my sense of the ridiculous. Afterwards, I was even more thrilled when I noticed the tiny bandage that had been carefully placed on the cow's udder. Photograph: Lesley Lord
Readers comp Nov2012: fishing village of Tanji in Gambia
Robin Smith: This was taken in the market of the small fishing village of Tanji in Gambia. There are rows upon rows of fish being smoked, which looked fantastic in the sunlight.
Natalie Mayer, judge: Stinky fish, drying in the sunshine. Can you smell them? Gorgeous back light and interesting subject. The wall is a big distraction though, I'd like to have seen less of that, and a bit more of what is going on in the distance. Still a strong composition though, and one of my three faves from this month's difficult theme.

Readers comp Nov2012: floating market in Thailand
Slawek Kozdras: I took the photo at a floating market in Thailand. The boy was selling postcards but struggled to come up with the right words for numbers in English. He didn't want to lose a customer so he wrote the price on his hand. I couldn't refuse to buy after such outburst of creativity.
Natalie Mayer, judge: Slavek has been busy again, does this guy ever stay at home? It's a strong image, well composed and considered, which is just what we expect from our regular contributor. Thanks Slavek!

Readers comp Nov2012: market in Chichicastenango, Guatemala
Sarah Hammond, winner: In the busy market in Chichicastenango, Guatemala, we stumbled upon a quiet balcony overlooking it and spent a happy half hour watching all the hustle and bustle from a distance. I love all the activity in this photo and spot something new every time I look at it.
Natalie Mayer, judge: Gorgeous colours and composition here. I love these vegetable markets where the food is stacked high, it's so beautiful. I can almost smell the herbs and feel the atmosphere and hubbub of the market. I love the lady reading her paper just below centre left. This image makes me want to travel, which is what travel photography is all about! A slight crop from the relatively empty top left and bottom right corners are the only things that could improve this image.
