BT gallery Dec: Delicious south Indian snacks
James Lidgett: Delicious south Indian snacks (idli and vada with a sambar sauce) on a banana leaf in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. Even here, at the southern most tip of India and a sacred pilgrimage site, food (almost) takes centre stage. Photograph: James Lidgett
BT gallery Dec: Food,Damnoen Saduak,Ratchaburi Province, Thailand.
Nick Board: Damnoen Saduak floating market is a colourful spectacle. It is now a prime tourist attraction, so I left Bangkok, around 65 miles away, at 3am to miss the mass of tourists that arrive later in the day. The boat vendors sell all manner of food from noodles to the red curry seen here. Photograph: Nick Board
BT gallery Dec: Kuala Lumpur street food
Joe Bennett: We had a tipoff that Jalan Alor street does the best satay in Kuala Lumpur and headed straight there on our first night. I wanted to capture the intensity of the place and show how food is at its heart. I had been watching the chefs go about their hectic duties and was mesmerised at their speed but also by the delicious food behind them. Jalan Alor is tasty chaos. Photograph: Joe Bennett
BT gallery Dec: Lexington Candy Shop on the Upper East Side of Manhattan
Ben Swales: The Lexington Candy Shop on the Upper East side of Manhattan. According to the owner, the place hasn’t been decorated since 1948, and there’s an original newspaper headline from the D-day invasions framed on the wall. It’s a proper, old-style gem in the midst of a load of over-priced swanky restaurants and bars, and it serves up classic ice-cream floats, club sandwiches and strong black coffee. A New York institution. Photograph: Ben Swales
BT gallery Dec: Malang market in Java
Natalie Hart: I was beating a hasty route through Malang market in Java – for a non-meat-eater it was an emotive place to be, but these brightly painted shellfish caught my eye and I stopped to take a quick picture before finding my way to the less stressful flower stalls! Photograph: Natalie Hart
BT gallery Dec: chilies hanging from a market stall in Rome
Jenny Bishop: I really wanted to capture the vibrant colour of these chilies in a Rome farmers' market. They stood out against the brown hues of the streets – and they do look like they’d make for some fine Italian cooking! Photograph: Jenny Bishop
BT gallery Dec: Bhaktapur, Nepal
Slawomir Starzynski, runner-up: This man was in front of the Kumari Chowk temple in Bhaktapur, Nepal delicately blowing and separating a handful of grain from the chaff. He did not pay attention to people walking around him, staying focused on his handful of grain.

Judge Natalie Mayer: Although there isn't a huge amount going on, it is still a superbly composed and technically spot-on picture that fits the theme. This photographer obviously has some good skills. Keep up the good work.

BT gallery Dec: Chocolate at Notting Hill carnival
Chris Mole, winner: This is the Chocolate Nation procession at London's Notting Hill carnival, showing the vibrancy and fun of the 'biggest chocolate mass band' in town.

Judge Natalie Mayer: This is a lively and energetic image. It's a bit grim, seeing those brown teeth so close up, but what the hell, the picture captures fun and life and is well composed and exposed. Out of all the images this month, this one really captures a moment and shows us a fun and interesting slice of life.
