Book of the week

Sydney (Insight Guides)

Let's be honest. If you haven't already booked your accommodation then it's unlikely you'll be staying in Sydney for the Olympics. But if you have - or if you're thinking of making the trip when those 100,000 spectators have returned home - then reserve space in your suitcase for this specially revamped guide.

For one thing, the book is worth its weight in photographs, most of which put the usual shots of the Opera House, the beach and the bridge to shame. But when you've done looking at pictures, you'd better start reading. Remember, the flight only lasts 14 hours.

In the beginning, there is history - and exceptionally lively stuff it is too. Then there are nine hefty features, covering every aspect of Sydney's considerable cultural life, before you arrive, all dressed up and ready to go, at the "Places" section.

There are thumbnail pictures and handy tips in the margins, and a dozen information panels on subjects such as Gay Sydney, the his tory of China Town and famous Sydneysiders (step forward, Paul Hogan and Nicole Kidman).

Finally, there are the obligatory practicals - how to travel, what to eat and where to catch some sport.

Oh yes - and those Olympics. Well, there's a special section telling you where you can catch all the events. Although if Sydney's half as good as it looks here, you'd be well advised to get out and see the town, and watch the Games on television.
