Looking for a Grand Hotel

Where can I find a Grand Hotel - that is, one where Palm Court-type music is played?

• The Savoy has Tea Dancing on Sundays where guests are served afternoon tea in the hotel's Thames Foyer and can enjoy dancing to the sounds of a four-piece band, which includes popular waltzes and tangos. Priced at £28 per person, tea dancing is held from 3.00-5.30pm and for bookings and enquiries telephone 020 7836 4343.

Alternatively, for something a little more lively, there's Stompin' at The Savoy when the hotel recreates the popularity of the Big Band sound. The Piccadilly Dance Orchestra strike up at 9.30, and there is a three course supper. Dancing, supper and a glass of champagne costs £46 per person. Telephone 020 7420 2356 for enquiries.

The Thames Foyer itself, where both these events take place, has an ambiance of history and glamour. The ceiling is a plaster reproduction of an original design created in silk by the famous society designer and photographer, Cecil Beaton, for The Savoy Coronation Ball, held on the night of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. The chandeliers feature hand-carved porcelain roses and one of the walls has a series of striking original Art Deco mirrors with a collage of coloured glass.

Hope this is of help.

Kind regards,

Nicola
