I can't learn Spanish in Cuba for three months straight because I'm British. Any way around this?

· Telephone the Cuban Embassy in London and ask for a three-month visa. They'll send out application forms, which are simple to complete and which need to be returned to the Embassy with the required cheque. Their address and telephone number is: Cuban Embassy, 167 High Holborn, London WC1V 6BA, 0870 2403675

· There are two ways around this. The first is to apply for a student visa (more expensive than a tourist visa) at the Cuban Consulate in London before departure. It requires a letter of confirmation of enrolment from a Cuban educational establishment, fees paid up front. The second is to convert the Cuban visitors' visa to a student visa once in Cuba; but again full fees need to be paid up front at a Cuban educational centre or university.

· Anyone studying Spanish at a Cuban academic institution will require a study visa. Cuba Solidarity Campaign (020 7263 6452) offers Spanish language courses in Havana through its exclusive partnership with the Faculty of Modern Languages at the University of Havana. Cuba Solidarity arranges appropriate study visas to cover the full length of courses on offer, from two weeks to one year, including beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Cuba Solidarity can offer a complete package from £899.00, including flight, language classes, study visa and accommodation in licensed 'casa particulares', equivalent to home stays in private accommodation.
