In Peru, for security always leave your passport in the hotel safe and carry a copy with you for identification. A British passport is worth £5,000 on the black market and is sought after by thieves. If you present a copy of your passport to a hotel reception desk, they will give you a government-funded 18% discount on your accommodation. This has to be done at the time of arrival when you negotiate and agree a price.

Riemann's P20 sun lotion is expensive (about £18 for 200ml) but a thin film gives factor 20 protection all day, in and out of the water. Applying it before breakfast means you are covered all day (bear in mind it takes an hour to work as it has to combine chemically with your skin melanin).
